Good Luck Stories... An Archive
Of "How Lucky" Stories Of The Month

Good Luck can mean the difference between becoming a victim of some catastrophe, or escaping a life threatening situation or serious injury.

This collection of "Lucky Break" stories from around the world shows us that even if we try to be aware of all aspects of safety and security for ourselves and our families, there are times we can still find ourselves in harm's way.

That's when an ounce of luck can make a ton of difference.

But we should always remember... ultimately we are at the mercy of fate, destiny, or God's will... call it what you will.

A popular quote says "You can trust in luck with a rabbit's foot... but remember... it didn't work for the rabbit".

Others say "You make your own luck"... or "If you go looking for trouble, you can be dead certain you'll find it".

What do you say?

$80m Diamonds for Billionaire's Daughter: ... November 12, 2015.

Hong Kong billionaire Joseph Lau has just bought 2 more diamonds for his 7 year-old daughter, Josephine.

One diamond (16.08 carat, pink) was purchased at Christie's for $28.5m and named "Sweet Josephine". The other, the most expensive diamond ever auctioned, was purchased at Sotheby's in Geneva (12.03 carat, large blue) for $48.5m and renamed "The Blue Moon of Josephine". These are in addition to the blue 7.03 carat diamond purchased in 2009 at Sotheby's for $9.5m and simply called "Josephine".

Looks like Josephine is off to a pretty good start. The billionaire (ranked 114th richest in the world by Forbes at $9.8billion) was convicted of bribery and corruption charges in Macau in 2012, but avoided prison because there is no extradition treaty between Macau and Hong Kong.

Smokestack Topples on Excavator: ... November 25, 2015.

The demolition of 158 foot tall smokestack almost finished very badly for an excavator driver in Pell City, Alabama.

Two attempts to topple the 118 year-old structure with demolition charges failed to bring it down, and only opened up a large hole near its base.

The driver moved his excavator in planning to encourage the smokestack to fall away from him. Instead it fell back on top of him... all 2.6 million tons of it, crushing the cabin. Miraculously, he emerged unharmed.

Jets Catch Fire on Runway: ... October 29, 2015.

The left engine of a Boeing 767 burst into flames as the jet was taxiing to a runway to take off from Fort Lauderdale in Florida (en route to Venezuela).

The 29 year-old Dynamic International Airways aircraft suddenly began leaking fuel and quickly erupted into a fire-ball sending a large cloud of dense black smoke skyward.

More than a 100 passengers and crew quickly evacuated down the emergency slides. 15 people were taken to hospital with burns, one seriously. If the jet had taken off it almost certainly would have resulted in a catastrophe.

This incident comes less than 2 months after a British Airways Boeing 777-200 (with 172 passengers onboard and en route to London) also had its left engine catch fire as it prepared to take off from Las Vegas' McCarran Airport. A "catastrophic engine failure" was blamed.

Sisters Saved from Barbaric Justice in India: ... September 18, 2015.

India's Supreme Court has ordered police in Delhi to provide protection to 2 sisters (aged 23 and 15) and their family.

The sisters were to be punished because their brother (also an "untouchable") had eloped with a married woman who belonged to a higher Hindu caste.

The punishment handed out (by the all male, unelected village council) was for the sisters to be raped and then paraded naked in public with their faces blackened.

The family had fled the village and their house been ransacked. Over half a million people around the world signed a petition prepared by Amnesty International UK against the horrendous punishment proposed.

VW Diesel Emissions Scandal Exposed: ... Sept 22, 2015.

The world's largest automobile manufacturer, has become embroiled in a scandal that has rocked the world.

Anti-pollution investigators have discovered that German company VW has for years been cheating in emissions testing of its diesel engines.

Instead of complying with strict US emission tests VW installed software on diesel engines to run in a special "clean-running mode" during government testing (on a dynamometer/rollers) but to then revert to the normal, dirtier but more economical mode during every day use.

Investigators were shocked to find that engines that were supposed to be ultra-clean were in fact emitting up to 40 times more dangerous Nitrogen Oxides than the legal limit. The dodgy software sensed when a car was being tested and injected urea into the exhaust system to clean up fumes.

The World Health Organisation believes up to 500,000 die prematurely in Europe yearly due to air pollution (half of all vehicles in Europe are diesel).

VW have admitted that at least 11 million such engines were produced. VW's share price plummeted 35% in 2 days wiping up to $17 billion off the company's value; not to mention the $18 billion in penalties and lawsuits to come.

Chris Brown Hates Domestic Violence: ... September 28, 2015.

American RnB singer Chris Brown is set to be denied an entry Visa to Australia on character grounds, and has 28 days to convince the authorities why he should be granted one. The reason is his conviction of felony assault for violently attacking his former girlfriend singer Rihanna in 2010.

Meanwhile, tickets to his One Hell Of A Night Tour are still being sold.

Chris Brown's reply is: "I would be more than grateful to come to Australia to raise awareness about domestic violence. I'm not the pink elephant in the room anymore... My life mistakes should be a wakeup call for everyone... Trying to prevent spousal abuse. The youth don't listen to parents nor do they listen to PSAs. A suspected jihadi terrorist has emerged from the toilet of a crowded French train armed with a Kalashnikov assault rifle, 9 magazines, a pistol and a box-cutter, and opened fire.

The attacker was quickly overpowered by 2 American soldiers on leave, their friend and a British man.

Cecil the Lion's Killer Sorry: ... July 28, 2015.

American Walter Palmer (from Minnesota) is suffering a huge backlash for killing Cecil the lion in Zimbabwe. The dentist paid $65,000 for the privilege.

The iconic lion (which was collared with a tracking device) was lured from the Hwange National Park with a dead animal carcass attached to the front bull-bar of a truck. It was only wounded with an arrow, then tracked and hunted down before being shot dead some 40 hours later.

The Minnesota dentist (who is something of a legend among bow hunters on websites, magazines and social media) is facing extradition back to Zimbabwe.

Now, a second American bow hunter is also accused of recently killing a lion near the same park without proper approval. Dr Jan Seski, a Pennsylvania oncologist, is also well known on social websites for bow hunters. Some entries describe how his arrows penetrate organs and split bones... "The arrow was shot quartering into the elephant, penetrated a rib and one lung, lacerated the heart and liver, and was recovered in the gut. The elephant went a short distance and died".

$4.5 Million in Sunken Treasure Found: ... August 20, 2015.

Treasure hunters have found over $4.5 million of sunken gold bullion in shallow water off a Florida beach.

The hall included over 350 Spanish gold coins, including 9 very rare Royal Escudos valued around $500,000 each.

The treasure was from a Spanish fleet of 12 galleons returning to Spain from Havana, Cuba in 1715 which was struck by a hurricane.

Eleven of the galleons were tossed onto reefs and sank; around 1,000 people died while some 1,500 made it to shore.

Two months earlier other divers found $1 million of coins in the same area. It is estimated the galleons were carrying up to $400 million of bullion in today's money, and that less than half has been recovered.

Massive Fire Dubai Skyscraper: ... Feb 20, 2015.

One of the world's tallest residential buildings, ironically named "The Torch", has caught fire in Dubai's Marina precinct.

The 86 story, 336 meter-high skyscraper ignited at 2:00am in the morning and was soon fiercely ablaze as high winds fanned the flames.

Thousands of people were evacuated from the tower and surrounding high-rises. No deaths or injuries were reported. A resident from the 59th floor said "There have been 3 fire alarms every week recently and all were false. This time... I smelt smoke. I took my wallet and ran down with my wife."

A spate of highrise fires around the globe has uncovered what may develop into a major scandal. It seems builders have been substituting approved non-flammable aluminium cladding with cheaper, non-compliant cladding from China (with a combustible plastic core) which is highly flammable.

They're even more lucky that so far Scotland Yard's armed robbery Flying Squad seem to have no clue who carried out the daring heist.

An armoured van transporting HK$525 million (US$68 million) lost part of its load when a faulty latch on a rear door dumped crates of money onto the road. Drivers stopped their vehicles and onlookers rushed out onto the road in a mad scramble for the loot (almost US$5 million).

One eyewitness described seeing "bundles of HK$500 wrapped in plastic"... one woman "had an armful of (at least 10) bricks of cash... she just disappeared".

Police warned that keeping the money was "an offence of theft which is very serious". Over US$2 million is still missing.

Sick Rape Plot on Craigslist: ... Dec 4, 2014.

A 53-year-old California woman has pleaded guilty to stalking and harassment charges (which carry jail term of up to 5 years).

The San Diego woman has a disabled daughter and was named local "Mother of the Year" in 2006. However, she turned into a monster when she was outbid for her "dream home" by another couple.

Some of the tactics she resorted to as payback were; stopping mail to the house; the unauthorised ordering and delivery of incontinence supplies and $1,000 worth of books; listing the property for re-sale; soliciting for missionaries to knock on the door; sending Valentine cards to women in the area in the husband's name; and posting online for everyone to come to a party there.

But worst of all... she placed an add on Craigslist posing as the woman and saying she always fantasised about a man coming to her house and raping her. "I'd love to be surprised and have a man show up at my door and force his way in the door and on me, totally taking me while I say 'No!".

One man actually tried twice. One time he couldn't get through the locked gate. The second time he was stopped because the husband appeared at the door.

The alleged rape of a 27-year-old female finance executive in Delhi, India has sparked outrage over internet taxi service Uber.

Uber, which is disrupting taxi industries all over the world, stands accused of not exercising enough care when it comes to background checks of its drivers.

In this case the 32-year-old Indian driver had a history of violent sexual abuse and previous charges of rape at knifepoint. Locals have called him "a compulsive sex offender".

Uber has been accused of expanding too rapidly and that the proper checks are not always in place. It doesn't help when one Uber top executive has been quoted as joking it should be called "Boober" because using the service is a great way to pick up women.
